About

Universiti Malaya (UM)

Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia’s oldest university, is situated on a vast 922-acre campus in southwest Kuala Lumpur. Established originally on September 28, 1905, as the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore, it became Universiti Malaya on October 8, 1949, following its merger with Raffles College. The name "Malaya" honors the country’s historical identity. The 1948 Carr-Saunders Commission highlighted UM’s role as a unifying institution for Malaysia’s diverse ethnic and religious communities. Rapid growth led to the creation of two autonomous divisions in 1959, which eventually evolved into a national university in 1962. The university’s first Chancellor, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, was installed on June 16, 1962, and today, His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah holds the position. UM’s vision is to be a globally impactful university, with a mission centered on advancing knowledge, nurturing future leaders, providing high-quality education, conducting impactful research, and continually enhancing services to benefit all stakeholders, especially its students.
